Hey RIM: It’s the App Store, Stupid!
Research in Motion’s BlackBerry 10 operating system has some appealing features, but its glaring absence of available apps will hurt the company’s efforts to regain relevance. The Waterloo, Ont.-based company focuses on making the user experience on its updated platform as “fluid” as possible. This includes new gestures so customers can see all notifications without leaving the device’s home screen, a messaging app that includes IMs, emails and text messages in the same space and a new live tile system and app drawer. When the iPhone and Android smartphones began to emerge, RIM missed the boat by failing to evolve its OS to keep up. Now, the company is missing it again as it spends all its time updating BlackBerry’s user interface while ignoring the health of its mobile app store. Features like live tiles on the home screen and an updated, intuitive keyboard are nice interface ideas, but they may not be enough to make customers go with BlackBerry over platforms with more established app stores.BlackBerry 10’s ability to run apps fully in the background without having to pause them could be a standout feature for the platform. However, most of what RIM is doing with its new OS are things that Apple and Google have already accomplished with iOS and Android, simply in a new packaging.Android and iOS offer hundreds of thousands of mobile apps, giving customers hundreds of different ways to use their devices. Developers are eager to support the platforms due to the number of users each has, but they will likely shy away from BlackBerry 10 until the OS builds a larger customer base.RIM was eager to show off the new look of BlackBerry 10, and with good reason. It offers a fresh take on some classic smartphone features and is the biggest leap the operating system has ever taken. But the company’s failure to aggressively recruit developers and give them incentive to support the platform will ultimately be its undoing. RIM has promised developers $10,000 for apps for the BlackBerry platform, but that may not be enough compared to the potential audience and profits rival systems offer. The BlackBerry 10 platform will launch later this year, but it may end up being the best platform no one is using because of its dire app situation.Hey RIM: It’s the App Store, Stupid! originally appeared at Mobiledia on Tue May 15, 2012 11:54 am.

Buying Guide: 10 best tablets in the world today
Best tablets: OverviewWhat’s the best tablet? Our verdict on the best tablets – constantly updatedTablets are taking the world by storm. Just a few years ago they were an unknown for many people, but nowadays you’ve got more choice than you can shake a mildly agitated badger at.And with choice comes decisions – difficult decisions. Luckily we’ve made it easy for you and pulled together the top 10 tablets of the moment available in the UK. We’ll keep this listing constantly updated as new players enter the market and the older ones fizzle out.For those of you who are still new to whole tablet game, let us fill you in on what one is:In general terms, today’s tablet computers sport touchscreens ranging in size from 7- up to 13-inches. These dimensions are by no means static, and boundaries can be blurred as smartphones get larger displays, a la the 5-inch Samsung Galaxy Note.Physical keyboards are also a rarity, but there are the exceptions such as the Asus Transformer Prime, which comes with a keyboard dock for the tablet. As with today’s best smartphones, applications play a big role on tablets you can get your fill of Temple Run, update your friends on Facebook and read the latest news, all on a bigger screen. So without further ado, here’s our 10 best tablets currently around, enjoy. If none of the top 10 tablets take your fancy then head on over to our tablet reviews pages, where you’ll find in-depth reviews for many more models.Let us know your thoughts on the top 10 and whether you think we’ve got the order wrong, in the comment box below.Number 10: Motorola Xoom10. Motorola XoomMotorola Xoom detailsRelease date: March 2011Price at launch: 499 (Wi-Fi) / 599 (Wi-Fi & 3G)Price today: 310 / 330OS: Android 3.0 Honeycomb (upgradeable to Android 4.0)TechRadar review: 4/5The Motorola Xoom was the first Android 3.0 (Honeycomb) tablet to hit the market. That made it the first Android tablet to ship with an OS designed especially for big screens, and that’s why it’s in the top 10.It may be the most elderly tablet in the top 10, but the Xoom can still pack a punch. It has a 10.1-inch display, 1GHz dual-core Tegra 2 processor, 1GB RAM, 32GB internal storage, microSD card, 5MP rear camera, 2MP front camera, 4G support and a 10 hour battery life. The Xoom has highly priced went it first arrived, at 499 (Wi-Fi) and 599 (Wi-Fi & 3G), but it can now be picked up for just a shade over 300.FutTv : 8a8Juop1L38ZHQuick verdictThe Toshiba AT200 is a good, solid and portable device, delivering everything you’d expect from an unfussy Android slate. If you’re looking for a standard tablet experience, the AT200 is certainly worth a look.Toshiba AT200 reviewNumber 8: Sony Tablet S8. Sony Tablet SSony Tablet S detailsRelease date: September 2011Price at launch: 349 (16GB) / 429 (32GB)Price today: 299 / 379OS: Android 3.1 Honeycomb (upgradeable to Android 4.0)TechRadar review: 4/5Sony was a late arrival to the tablet party, taking almost two years to field its first attempt in the form of the Tablet S.The Tablet S takes a unique design angle, styled to resemble a folded over paperback book, which makes it stand out in the sea of rectangular slates we see today.Sony has also tweaked the Android 3.1 operating system, making it very easy to use, plus there’s a host of exclusive content including various PlayStation titles which you won’t get on other Android tabs. With the 16GB version available at 299 it’s a tempting option for anyone who wants a quality tablet, although the lack of 3G support is slightly disappointing, as it limits your internet activity to Wi-Fi hotspots.FutTv : 0xT238420v700Quick verdictNo longer number one, the iPad 2 is still an excellent tablet and at its reduced price is perfect for anyone longing for a bit of iPad action, but unable to stretch their budget to the new iPad. Shame it’s only officially available in 16GB now.iPad 2 reviewNumber 6: Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF1016. Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101Asus Eee Pad Transformer detailsRelease date: April 2011Price at launch: from 379 (no dock) / 429 (with dock)Price today: from 292 / 399OS: Android 3.2 Honeycomb (upgradeable to Android 4.0)TechRadar review: 4.5/5The Eee Pad Transformer TF101 came in and turned the tablet market upside down as Asus gave us this tablet-come-netbook concoction. The tablet itself is a perfectly capable device, sporting Nvidia’s dual-core Tegra 2 processor, a 10.1-inch display, 5MP rear camera, 1.3MP front camera, microSD slot and a choice of memory (16GB or 32GB) and colours.Add to that the keyboard dock which transforms (see what they’ve done with the name?) the tablet into a netbook and suddenly the boundaries between tablets and computers becomes even more blurred. There is now the more powerful Transformer Prime (look out for that a bit later), but with the extra power comes a higher price, so the TF101 is a great economical option.Quick verdictThe Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 is an excellent tablet. It’s an all-round performance expert with very few weaknesses – but slightly starting to creak with age now, so make sure you get it for a good price.Asus Eee Pad Transformer TF101 reviewNumber 55. Asus Eee Pad SliderAsus Eee Pad Slider detailsRelease date: October 2011Price at launch: from 399Price today: from 399OS: Android 3.1 Honeycomb (upgradeable to Android 4.0)TechRadar review: 4.5/5Carrying on from where the Transformer TF101 left off, the Eee Pad Slider takes a design note from the ill-fated Nokia N97 with a slide out keyboard. It’s another interesting twist on the tablet market by the ever innovative Taiwanese firm and the Eee Pad Slider packs a great screen and excellent performance into its admittedly slightly heavy and chunky frame. The screen is displayed at the perfect viewing angle when you slide the keyboard out, which itself is well spaced, and Asus has included some useful apps too.The Eee Pad Slide hasn’t dropped in price yet, but with Asus currently releasing more tablets, expect the cost to, *ahem*, slide in the near future.FutTv : v284dJF68Yr0BQuick verdictThe Galaxy Tab 10.1 is one of the best Android tablets around, but Samsung’s highly competitive pricing is yet to drop. Competitors have reduced their asking prices, but if it’s quality you want you’ll have to pay for it.Samsung Galaxy Tab 10.1 reviewNumber 22. Asus Transformer PrimeAsus Transformer Prime detailsRelease date: January 2012Price at launch: 499Price today: 499OS: Android 3.2 Honeycomb (upgradeable to Android 4.0)TechRadar review: 4.5/5Asus wowed us when it launched its Eee Pad Transformer TF101 and with the Transformer Prime it has managed to go one better. The Transformer Prime packs a mighty 1.3GHz quad-core processor into a super-slim 8.6mm chassis and although it shipped with Android 3.2, the Prime was the first Android tab to receive the upgrade to Ice Cream Sandwich. That huge processor means using the Transformer Prime is a breeze, with it able to process full HD movies and multiple apps with ease. You also get a super-crisp 10.1-inch IPS display (1280 x800), a surprisingly good 8MP camera capable of recording 1080p video and 32GB of internal storage, with a microSD card slot available if you need more space.FutTv : 0PR9neOlmV857Quick verdictDodgy name aside, the new iPad is the crème de la crème in the tablet market. The eye-popping Retina Display is something to behold, the vast array of tablet apps in the App Store is something Google Play can’t touch and the OS simply just works. If you’re pockets are deep and your need is great, then the new iPad is the tablet for you – and the tablet which all others are compared to, until next year at least.New iPad 3 reviewNew tablets 2012 – what’s coming up?New tablets 2012 – what’s coming up?This top ten is by no means the be all and end all. There are plenty of new tablets to get excited about this year and which could challenge the new iPad for top spot.If none of the tablets in our top 10 take your fancy then maybe you will be enticed by the ones which we could see later this year.Google Nexus tabletGoogle’s ex-CEO Eric Schmidt has confirmed that the search giant is working on its own tablet, promising to bring "a tablet of the highest quality to market in the next six months".There is little detail on the Nexus tablet, but reports suggest that Google is working with a third-party manufacturer, possibly Asus or Samsung, to produce the hardware for the device.Read our Google Nexus tablet release date, news and rumours article for all your next-gen information.iPad MiniThe iPad Mini is a rumour refusing to die, and the more we hear about it the more we start to believe that yes, Apple may actually be working on this.Speculated to sport a 7.85-inch display with the same resolution as the iPad 2, the iPad Nano as it has also been known, would be a major step away from former boss Steve Jobs’ ethos a man who proclaimed smaller tablets "dead on arrival".Read our iPad Mini release date, news and rumours article to get your fix of rumours.Amazon Kindle Fire 2The original Amazon Kindle Fire never made it to the UK, so we’re keeping our fingers firmly crossed that Amazon’s second attempt makes it over the pond.Expected to be another budget offering, the Kindle Fire 2 looks to majorly undercut Apple and scoop up the low end of the market, however the iPad Mini may have something to say about that.Read our Amazon Kindle Fire 2 release date, news and rumours article for all the information.Windows 8 tabletsWindows is lining up its next big operating system for an October launch and as well as covering desktops and laptops, Windows 8 will also encompasses tablets and phones. It seems like several manufactures are keen to get on the Windows 8 tablet action, with the likes of Samsung, Asus, HP, Dell, Nokia and Lenovo all reported to be working on one – so expect a flurry of new devices to arrive towards the end of 2012.Read our Windows 8 tablets: what you need to knowAsus PadfoneIs it a phone? Is it tablet? Is it a netbook? No, it’s all three, and its got a stylus!Asus are covering every base imaginable with the Padfone in the hope to gain a big win in three markets at the same time. Will it pay off – who knows? But it’s certainly an interesting concept.Read our hands on: Asus Padfone reviewAndroid 5.0 Jelly BeanThere’s a chance that Google will release the update to its Ice Cream Sandwich mobile platform sometime this year, sweetly named Jelly Bean.Details are few and far between, but if the next OS does launch in 2012 expect to see manufacturers churn out new tablets to hail its arrival.Read our Android Jelly Bean: what we expect to see article to learn all about the next-gen platform.BlackBerry PlayBook 2Not to be confused with the PlayBook 2.0 software upgrade for BlackBerry’s initial tablet, the PlayBook 2 is set to run the new BB10 software RIM has spent a year and a half developing.BB10 is expected to launch later this year and we hope RIM makes a marked improvement on the first PlayBook, which had several key flaws leading to poor sales.Related StoriesApple owns tablet market, while Android stumblesMicrosoft may restrict users to one browser on Windows 8 tabletsUpdated: New iPad Mini release date, news and rumoursiPad Mini could be same price as Kindle Fire

Exclusive: Samsung: ‘No point in waiting to launch a product’
Samsung has told TechRadar it’s aiming to launch new products much closer to their announcement, which could mean the Galaxy S3 will be on shelves before June rolls around. In an exclusive interview with TechRadar, Simon Stanford, Samsung’s VP of telecommunications and networks for UK and Ireland said in March that timing launches around industry events isn’t always the most efficient strategy:”Traditionally the industry works in cycles around an event, meaning there’s usually quite a period of time between announcement and period of launch.”Commercially, you have to question that; plus it presents a challenge by putting you in a position where everyone knows what you’re up to.”However, Stanford stopped short of naming the Galaxy S3 outright, stating: “In terms of any successor to the S2, that will be hosted at separate event in due course. “Whatever it is, and whatever it’s going to be. As it stands, nothing exists. This is all should any successor be announced.”Under wrapsBut it seems Samsung’s stance has shifted to maximise exposure and ‘online buzz’ around its products – and also in terms of staying safe in the increasingly potent patent landscape between manufacturers, which goes some way to explaining its lack of press conference at MWC 2012:”The industry is now highly competitive and fiercer than I’ve ever seen it in the 15 years I’ve been working in it. Just look at entrants into the Android space this year alone,” said Stanford.”Protecting IP and assets is becoming vastly important to everyone; now the development is such that whatever the product is it has to be protected at all costs.”I don’t read any more into it than that, it’s just about making sure we protect whatever needs protecting until such a time that that product, whatever it may be, is about.”S-Pen. Definitely not the Pen-SThere have been some rumours that the next Galaxy would launch with the S-Pen compatibility as the Galaxy Note, but it seems this may be wide of the mark. While Stanford talked up the positives of bringing the stylus back into the mobile fold, he pointed out that its use was still being evaluated for future products based on consumer reception, which may mean it’s too soon to see it on the Galaxy S3:”The difference with our S-Pen is it has its own apps; it’s a pen with brain. The original stylus was inanimate: you just hit the resistive screen and away you went. This has its own apps to work with and developers are creating apps around this magic pen,” he added.”At the moment, I would say ‘why not [add it into future products]?’, as there is a need so we are fulfilling it; we’ll see what the campaign [for the Samsung Galaxy Note] shows up and we’ll see what the results are from that.
